What is a .DCS file?

DCS is Kodak’s professional camera RAW format. Opened in Adobe Lightroom.

Did you know
  • DCS comes from Kodak’s pioneering professional DSLRs of the 1990s.
  • The Kodak DCS 100 of 1991 was the first commercially available digital SLR, built on a Nikon F3 body and sold for around 20,000 US dollars.
  • The DCS 100 stored its pictures on a separate shoulder-slung Digital Storage Unit, as no memory card of the day could hold them.
  • Fewer than a thousand DCS 100 units were ever made, and surviving examples now change hands for thousands of dollars at auction.
  • Kodak’s DCS cameras were aimed squarely at press photographers, and an early prototype was trialled by the Associated Press.
What Analyser shows you
Open camera RAW files from Sony (ARW), Canon (CR2, CR3, CRW), Nikon (NEF, NRW), Fujifilm X-Trans (RAF), Sigma Foveon (X3F), Olympus (ORF), Panasonic (RW2), Pentax (PEF), Adobe DNG and many more. Reads full EXIF and lens data, the true sensor resolution, GPS and histograms, recovers the Sony and Nikon shutter actuation count, and develops the RAW - decoding the sensor to a full-resolution image, or extracting the embedded preview when a true demosaic is not available.
