What is a .NEF file?

NEF is Nikon’s camera RAW format (Nikon Electronic Format), holding unprocessed sensor data. Opened in Nikon NX Studio or Adobe Lightroom.

Did you know
  • Nikon has used the NEF format since the late 1990s.
  • NEF stands for Nikon Electronic Format and debuted with the Nikon D1, the company’s first all-Nikon digital SLR, in 1999.
  • Early Nikon bodies such as the D1 recorded 12-bit NEF files; 14-bit NEFs arrived with the D3 and D300 in 2007.
  • A NEF file holds the unprocessed sensor data, leaving choices like white balance and sharpening for editing software.
  • NEF is Nikon’s format for its professional and enthusiast SLRs, distinct from the simpler NRW used by Coolpix compacts.
What Analyser shows you
Open camera RAW files from Sony (ARW), Canon (CR2, CR3, CRW), Nikon (NEF, NRW), Fujifilm X-Trans (RAF), Sigma Foveon (X3F), Olympus (ORF), Panasonic (RW2), Pentax (PEF), Adobe DNG and many more. Reads full EXIF and lens data, the true sensor resolution, GPS and histograms, recovers the Sony and Nikon shutter actuation count, and develops the RAW - decoding the sensor to a full-resolution image, or extracting the embedded preview when a true demosaic is not available.
