What is a .CR3 file?

CR3 is Canon’s newer camera RAW format, used by recent EOS cameras. Opened in Canon Digital Photo Professional or Adobe Lightroom.

Did you know
  • Canon introduced CR3 in 2018 to replace the long-running CR2.
  • Unlike the TIFF-based CR2, CR3 is built on the ISO base media file format, the same MP4-style container used for video.
  • CR3 debuted on the Canon EOS M50, the first camera to write the new raw format.
  • It introduced Canon’s C-RAW (Compact Raw) option, a lossy mode that can shrink files by roughly 40% with little visible quality loss.
  • The MP4-style structure gives CR3 faster reading and writing and more flexible metadata handling than the older CR2.
What Analyser shows you
Open camera RAW files from Sony (ARW), Canon (CR2, CR3, CRW), Nikon (NEF, NRW), Fujifilm X-Trans (RAF), Sigma Foveon (X3F), Olympus (ORF), Panasonic (RW2), Pentax (PEF), Adobe DNG and many more. Reads full EXIF and lens data, the true sensor resolution, GPS and histograms, recovers the Sony and Nikon shutter actuation count, and develops the RAW - decoding the sensor to a full-resolution image, or extracting the embedded preview when a true demosaic is not available.
