What is a .ORF file?

ORF is Olympus’s camera RAW format. Opened in OM Workspace or Adobe Lightroom.

Did you know
  • ORF is the raw format used by Olympus (now OM System) cameras.
  • An ORF file is essentially a TIFF variant, but its header carries Olympus’s own marker (MMOR, IIRO or IIRS) rather than the standard TIFF signature.
  • ORF files store 12 or 14 bits of tonal data per channel, far more than the 8 bits a finished JPEG keeps, which is what allows heavy exposure recovery.
  • Recent Olympus and OM System bodies offer a lossless-compressed ORF variant that shrinks the file without discarding any sensor data.
  • Olympus’s own OM Workspace (formerly Viewer) applies the camera’s art filters and processing to ORF files exactly as the body would have done in-camera.
What Analyser shows you
Open camera RAW files from Sony (ARW), Canon (CR2, CR3, CRW), Nikon (NEF, NRW), Fujifilm X-Trans (RAF), Sigma Foveon (X3F), Olympus (ORF), Panasonic (RW2), Pentax (PEF), Adobe DNG and many more. Reads full EXIF and lens data, the true sensor resolution, GPS and histograms, recovers the Sony and Nikon shutter actuation count, and develops the RAW - decoding the sensor to a full-resolution image, or extracting the embedded preview when a true demosaic is not available.
