What is a .RW2 file?
RW2 is Panasonic’s camera RAW format, used by Lumix cameras. Opened in Adobe Lightroom or Panasonic’s software.

- RW2 is the raw format for Panasonic’s Lumix line.
- RW2 is the newer of Panasonic’s raw formats; earlier Lumix cameras simply used a plain .raw extension before RW2 took over.
- Leica’s RWL files are effectively the same format as RW2, reflecting the close partnership in which Leica bodies share Panasonic engineering.
- Like most raw formats, RW2 uses a TIFF-style container to hold the Bayer sensor readout together with the camera’s metadata.
- RW2 preserves the full per-channel bit depth of the Lumix sensor, giving editors far more latitude for white balance and exposure than a JPEG allows.
