What is a .RTF file?

RTF is a portable rich-text document format. Opened by WordPad, Microsoft Word and most word processors.

Did you know
  • Microsoft created RTF in 1987, and it still opens in WordPad, Word and almost every word processor.
  • RTF was formalised in 1987 by Microsoft Word developers including Charles Simonyi, and first shipped with Word 3.0 for Macintosh.
  • Its formatting is carried by backslash control words within 7-bit ASCII text; Microsoft froze the specification at version 1.9.1 in 2008.
