What is a .YM file?

YM holds chiptune music from the Atari ST’s YM2149 sound chip.

Did you know
  • YM captures the distinctive sound of the Atari ST’s music chip.
  • YM was devised by Arnaud Carré (“Leonard”) for his ST-Sound emulator, and the file is really a register dump of the chip replayed cycle by cycle.
  • The same YM2149 sound chip powered the Amstrad CPC, the ZX Spectrum 128 and MSX machines, so YM can capture tunes from across the 8-bit and 16-bit era.

Depth of analysis
.YM is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
Open a .YM file
Drag a .YM file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
