What is a .W64 file?

W64 (Wave64) lifts WAV’s 4 GB size limit. Created by Sony for Sound Forge.

Did you know
  • Wave64 let Sound Forge record audio well beyond the old WAV size limit.
  • Wave64 was created by Sonic Foundry, the maker of Sound Forge, before the company and product passed to Sony.
  • It mirrors WAV’s chunk layout but swaps the four-character chunk IDs for 128-bit GUIDs and 64-bit sizes, smashing the old 4 GB ceiling.

Depth of analysis
.W64 is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
