What is a .EC3 file?
EC3 holds Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) surround audio, used by streaming and Blu-ray.
- Did you know
- Dolby Digital Plus made its disc debut on HD DVD, where it was a mandatory codec, appearing on launch titles such as Serenity in April 2006.
- When Dolby Atmos is streamed by services such as Netflix or Disney+, it actually travels inside a Dolby Digital Plus stream, using a technique called Joint Object Coding.
- Netflix first offered 5.1 surround sound in 2010 using Dolby Digital Plus, with the PlayStation 3 as the first device able to play it.
- What Analyser reads
- Identify Dolby surround codecs - Digital Plus (E-AC-3), TrueHD, MLP, and Atmos - with channel-layout detection (5.1, 7.1).
- Depth of analysis
- .EC3 is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
- Open a .EC3 file
- Drag a .EC3 file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
