What is a .MAX file?
MAX is the native scene format of Autodesk 3ds Max. Created and opened by 3ds Max.

- 3ds Max is a leading 3D tool for games and visual effects, descended from 1990s 3D Studio.
- The MAX scene format arrived with 3D Studio MAX 1.0 in 1996, the Windows successor to the DOS-based 3D Studio.
- 3D Studio was originally written by the Yost Group and published by Autodesk, later under the Kinetix and Discreet brands.

- .MAX is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
