What is a .XMP file?
XMP is Adobe’s XML metadata sidecar, storing edits and information about a media file. Used across Adobe apps.

- Adobe introduced XMP in 2001 as an open standard for embedding metadata in files.
- Adobe based XMP on the W3C’s Resource Description Framework, serialised as XML, so metadata can travel embedded inside the file.
- XMP was standardised by ISO as ISO 16684, cementing it as an open metadata format.

- Open the XMP sidecar (.xmp) that Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw and darktable write next to a raw photo to keep its edits while the raw stays untouched, and see the develop recipe visualised: the tone curve drawn as a real curve, the Basic-panel sliders (exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, texture, clarity, dehaze, vibrance and saturation) as bipolar bars, the HSL colour mixer, and the crop rectangle. Reads the editor and process version, the paired raw file, white balance, star rating and colour label, the camera and lens metadata copied from the raw, and the catalog title, keywords and copyright - all in the browser. A darktable sidecar lists the processing modules its edit switches on.
