What is a .OTIO file?

OTIO (OpenTimelineIO) is an open editing-timeline interchange format used across film and VFX tools.

Did you know
  • OpenTimelineIO was created at Pixar and open-sourced in 2018.
  • An OTIO file is plain JSON, with every clip, track and gap stored as a nested object tagged by an OTIO_SCHEMA field that records its type and version.
  • OpenTimelineIO became the fifth project hosted by the Academy Software Foundation, the same body that stewards OpenColorIO and OpenEXR.
  • The format deliberately stores only the edit decisions and references to media, not the footage itself, so a whole timeline can be a tiny text file.
  • OTIO works through pluggable adapters that translate to and from other timeline formats such as Final Cut Pro XML, AAF and EDL.
What Analyser shows you
Visualise editing timelines exported from Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid: CMX3600 EDL, Final Cut Pro FCPXML and OpenTimelineIO (OTIO). Renders the tracks with clip blocks positioned by timecode, plus durations, clip names and frame rate.
