What is a .OTIO file?
OTIO (OpenTimelineIO) is an open editing-timeline interchange format used across film and VFX tools.
- Did you know
- OpenTimelineIO was created at Pixar and open-sourced in 2018.
- An OTIO file is plain JSON, with every clip, track and gap stored as a nested object tagged by an OTIO_SCHEMA field that records its type and version.
- OpenTimelineIO became the fifth project hosted by the Academy Software Foundation, the same body that stewards OpenColorIO and OpenEXR.
- The format deliberately stores only the edit decisions and references to media, not the footage itself, so a whole timeline can be a tiny text file.
- OTIO works through pluggable adapters that translate to and from other timeline formats such as Final Cut Pro XML, AAF and EDL.
- What Analyser shows you
- Visualise editing timelines exported from Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid: CMX3600 EDL, Final Cut Pro FCPXML and OpenTimelineIO (OTIO). Renders the tracks with clip blocks positioned by timecode, plus durations, clip names and frame rate.
- Open a .OTIO file
- Drag a .OTIO file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It opens entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
