What is a .FCPXML file?

FCPXML is Apple’s Final Cut Pro project interchange format - an XML description of an edit. Created by Final Cut Pro.

Did you know
  • FCPXML is the interchange format for Final Cut Pro X, introduced by Apple in 2011.
  • Apple defines FCPXML with a Document Type Definition and publishes a versioned archive of every DTD release, so tools can target a specific revision.
  • FCPXML is completely incompatible with the older Final Cut Pro 7 XML, known as XMEML, because Final Cut Pro X reorganised how a project is stored internally.
  • Newer versions of Final Cut Pro can usually export an older FCPXML revision, giving third-party tools a backward-compatible bridge.
  • Because it is plain XML describing an edit rather than the media, an FCPXML file is tiny next to the footage it refers to.
What Analyser shows you
Visualise editing timelines exported from Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Avid: CMX3600 EDL, Final Cut Pro FCPXML and OpenTimelineIO (OTIO). Renders the tracks with clip blocks positioned by timecode, plus durations, clip names and frame rate.
