What is a .XPM file?
XPM is an X Window System colour image, also stored as C source code.

- XPM added colour to the C-source image trick of the older XBM format.
- XPM was created in 1989 at the Bull Research Center in France and, unlike monochrome XBM, supports colour and transparent pixels.
- Colours in an XPM image can be given as X11 colour names rather than just hex codes.

- .XPM is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
