What is a .CPG file?
CPG records the character encoding of a shapefile’s attribute table.

- A CPG is a tiny one-line companion to a shapefile, naming the code page so accented or non-Latin text reads correctly.
- It must share the shapefile’s base name, and without it GIS tools fall back to the system’s default encoding.
