Update notes.
2.0
Wide Angle
6 June 2026, 05:10
- The second big one - Analyser now recognises well over a hundred more formats and looks deeper into the ones it already knew.
- NewOver 120 new file types are identified, with version, author and header details pulled out where they exist - spanning developer & data files, archives, 3D & CAD, disk images & firmware, game assets, documents & e-books, email & contacts, security & certificates, science & engineering, and maps & GIS.
- NewVideo-editing projects read in far more detail - After Effects, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, DaVinci Resolve, Filmora and CapCut now surface what is inside the project rather than just naming it.
- New10-bit video is now read in full. Analyser reports the bit depth and chroma subsampling (4:2:0 / 4:2:2 / 4:4:4) of H.264 and HEVC, so footage like Sony XAVC HS / FX-series is correctly flagged as 10-bit 4:2:2.
- NewWhen a photo or video can’t be shown because of a browser limitation - 10-bit 4:2:2 footage, PSD, EXR, TGA and the like - a clear banner now explains why and recommends VLC for video, instead of a dead, empty player.
- NewYour offline downloads remember themselves - each tier shows a “Cached” tag with its version the moment the page loads, and quietly refreshes itself when the app updates.
- FixLarge videos load faster - the first frame is grabbed only when you ask for it, and the checksum is skipped by default on big files. The spectrogram now opens on its logarithmic frequency axis, closer to how you hear.

Field Guide
6 June 2026, 02:41
- NewThe supported-formats list has been rebuilt - formats are now grouped by category (images, audio, video, documents, 3D & CAD, archives, maps, games…) with filter chips to narrow it at a tap, a FULL or ID badge on each row showing whether it opens in a viewer or is identified from its header, highlighted search matches, a running count, and an expand-all toggle. On a phone it slides up as a bottom sheet.
- NewThe photo brightness histogram now spans the full width above the image and can be clicked to zoom.
- FixReading text from images and PDFs now uses one language picker, with a built-in
[?]note on what it can and can’t do and a clearer per-language download hint; the button now reads Extract text. - FixIf an offline download can’t fetch every file - you’re offline, or a server is unreachable - it now says how many failed and lets you retry, instead of stopping quietly. The recommended Everything tier is marked with a small crown.
- FixThe lightbox re-fits the image when you rotate or resize the window, the heading hover effect thins in faster and no longer reflows after a resize, and the photo colour palette keeps its single row on large phones.
1.28
In Brief
5 June 2026, 20:30
- NewProfessional video formats the browser can’t play - editing and intermediate codecs like Apple ProRes, Avid DNxHD/DNxHR, GoPro CineForm, DV and uncompressed - are now named, and their first visible frame is pulled out with FFmpeg for a preview you can analyse, instead of a blunt “can’t play” error.
- NewThe photo location map now works fully offline - its markers and controls are bundled with the app rather than fetched from the internet.
- NewResult cards fold away - click any card’s heading to collapse it, so a long analysis is easier to scan. Once a file is loaded, the dropzones tuck into a single Analyse next file? button.
- NewA plain-language
[?]note now appears automatically beside dozens more readouts - container, codec, aspect ratio, bitrate, channels and the rest. - NewThe Changelog gains a tl;dr button - one tap condenses every release, top to bottom, into a sentence or two apiece, so you can skim the whole history at a glance. Tap it again for the full notes.
Older updates
1.27
Dovetail
5 June 2026, 20:00
- Maintenance - dozens of small helper functions that had been copy-pasted across the format parsers (the scrollable text blocks, date formatting and byte-range reads) were folded into shared utilities, so there is now a single copy of each instead of fifteen. Purely internal tidying; nothing changes in how the app works.
1.26
Cover Story
5 June 2026, 19:30
- NewImages pulled out of other files are now analysed in the Photo section. Album art from a song, an e-book’s cover, or a rendered PDF page open with the full photo readout - preview, histogram, EXIF, OCR - and light up the Photo tab, instead of being tucked inline.
- NewOCR on a PDF page now asks which language, from the same sixty-plus language menu as image OCR. Tick Remember for this session to skip the prompt on later scans, and each language shows whether it is already downloaded or will fetch on first use.
- NewThe supported-formats list - both the pop-up and the About page - is now grouped into Full analysis, Core formats and Extended formats, so the headline viewers stand apart from the long tail of identified types.
- FixOpen PDF in browser now opens the file in a new tab instead of prompting to download it.
1.25
Floor Plan
5 June 2026, 18:30
- Maintenance - the website’s files were reorganised into clearer folders (the code grouped by role under assets/js, with styles and images moved into their own folders) and every reference updated to match. Nothing changes in how the app works; it’s purely tidier under the hood.
1.24
Glide
5 June 2026, 18:00
- FixThe title hover effect - where the letters thin out toward your cursor - now eases smoothly both as the pointer arrives and as it leaves, on the main header and the section headings alike, rather than snapping back abruptly.
1.23
Developed
5 June 2026, 16:10
- NewMany more camera RAW formats now open with the full photo analysis - Hasselblad (3FR), Phase One (IIQ), Leica, Kodak, Minolta, GoPro and others - while rare cinema RAW (RED, Blackmagic, ARRIRAW) is identified.
- NewThe camera shutter actuation count is now read from RAW files and JPEGs that record it - useful for gauging how much a used camera body has been worn.
- NewRAW develop settings - drop a RAW together with its .xmp sidecar (the kind Photoshop, Lightroom and Camera Raw save), or use the new Import XMP settings button under the thumbnail, and the applied edits (exposure, contrast, white balance, crop, rating…) are listed. Capture One and DxO sidecars are read too.
- NewComputational-photo wrappers are flagged - Apple ProRAW and Live Photo, Google and Samsung Motion Photo, and Ultra HDR gain maps.
- FixThe greyed-out Photo, Sound and Video tabs are no longer highlighted as you scroll a non-media file’s results.
1.22
Omnivore
5 June 2026, 16:10
- NewHundreds more file formats are now recognised - across images, audio, video, documents, archives, 3D, maps, email, security, gaming and science - so far fewer files come back as “unknown”. Browse the full list.
- NewNew full viewers: comic books (CBZ, CBR) open as a page-by-page reader like the PDF one; SQLite databases and .sql dumps show their full schema - tables, columns, row counts and a data sample; and JPEG 2000 images decode and display.
- NewMuch deeper analysis of files you could already open: the AI-generation prompt hidden in a PNG, an MP3’s bitrate, video codec / rotation / HDR, PDF bookmarks, forms and permissions, Word tracked-changes and Excel formulas, ZIP safety warnings, and GPX elevation profiles.
- NewSmart type detection - drop a file with no extension, or the wrong one, and Analyser works out what it really is and offers to open it that way.
- FixCSV files with quoted line breaks now parse correctly, SVG previews are sanitised for safety, and the in-page search reveals matches tucked inside collapsed sections.
- The navbar now greys out the Photo, Sound and Video tabs for a non-media file, so they can’t mislead.
1.21
Magnetic Type
5 June 2026, 02:04
- The playful title effect - where letters thin out as your cursor passes over them - now reaches the section headings on the About and Changelog pages too, so hovering a heading gives the same gentle pull.
- FixThe letter spacing in headings now holds steady when you zoom the page in your browser, instead of the gaps drifting apart.
1.20
House Style
5 June 2026, 01:40
- A full visual tidy-up across the whole app - one consistent accent red, matching spacing and type sizes, and unified hover and focus states everywhere - so every page and panel now looks of a piece.
- NewEvery button, link, and control now shows a clear keyboard focus outline when you tab to it, so the app is far easier to use without a mouse. (It stays hidden for mouse clicks.)
- FixThe layout now switches to its single-column phone view at one consistent screen width, so the header and the page body always change together.
1.19
Sign Posts
5 June 2026, 00:53
- NewShortcut files are now decoded - Windows shortcuts (LNK) reveal the target path, arguments, working directory, icon, hotkey, and window state, while internet (URL) and macOS web shortcuts (WEBLOC) show the address they point to.
- NewTHM files - the small JPEG thumbnail a camera saves next to each video clip - now open with the full photo analysis.
- NewCanon camera catalogs (CTG) - the hidden DCIM index a Canon camera keeps - are read for the folder they track and its photo, movie, and voice-memo counts.
- NewRaw disk images (IMG) now have their partition table (MBR/GPT) and first filesystem decoded - FAT, NTFS, or exFAT, with the volume label and size.
- NewREC files are identified, telling apart PVR/DVR video recordings from data-recovery session files.
- FixMarkdown files now open in the Markdown viewer reliably, and the “view source” popup behaves.
1.18
Marked Up
4 June 2026, 23:27
- NewMarkdown files now open as a fully formatted, readable page - headings, lists, tables, code blocks, and links - instead of raw text.
- NewThe spectrogram gains a Reassigned view alongside the standard one, sharpening blurry tones into crisp lines, with the analysis settings tucked into a tidy Advanced dropdown.
- NewYou can now zoom the spectrogram in much further (up to 48x) with a scrollbar to pan along, and the Peak stat now points to the loudest moment - its timestamp and level - rather than the loudest frequency.
- The photo aspect ratio now also names the nearest standard ratio (like 16:9 or 4:3) next to the exact figure.
- FixThe file-loading animation no longer stutters under heavy load - it now runs smoothly while a big file is being read.
1.17
In the Picture
4 June 2026, 13:18
- NewCover art in music files and EPUB books is now fully analysed as a photo right where it appears - dimensions, colours, EXIF, and the rest show inline, with no extra click.
- NewMore readouts now carry a plain-language “?” note - the MIME type line across photos, audio, video and documents, and the ISRC recording code in music tags - explaining what each one means.
- FixDropping a file onto the About or Changelog page now reliably hands it to the analyser instead of occasionally doing nothing.
1.16
Inside Out
4 June 2026, 12:33
- NewPictures buried inside documents can now be analysed in place - click an image in a Word, PowerPoint, or EPUB file, or in a PDF, and the full photo analysis (EXIF, histogram, colours, OCR…) runs on it.
- NewAudio your browser can’t play - WMA, AC3, DTS, AMR - no longer just errors out: the container details, tags, lyrics, and cover art are read straight from the file.
- NewZIP archives now report the compression method each file uses (Deflate, Stored…) and show a CRC checksum per entry.
- NewLightroom catalogs (LRCAT) are now read as the SQLite databases they are.
- A SHA-256 fingerprint now appears for ZIP, CSV, SVG, PDF, and undecodable audio too - it was missing for these.
- FixThe spectrogram now truly fills the screen in fullscreen with no gap, and the bottom (0 Hz) and top frequency labels are no longer clipped.
- FixClearer, more accurate explanations for the photo brightness histogram and the dominant-colour picker.
1.15
On the Map
4 June 2026, 07:19
- NewSubtitle files (SRT, WebVTT, ASS/SSA) now open as a full timed cue list - cue count, total on-screen time, and every line with its timecode.
- NewMIDI files are parsed into a readable score - tempo (BPM), time signature, track names, the General MIDI instruments used, note counts, and length. (MIDI is a score, not recorded sound, so there’s no playback.)
- NewMap data - drop a GPX track, KML, or GeoJSON file and the route is plotted on a map, with distance, elevation range, time span, and bounds.
1.14
Full Frame
4 June 2026, 06:47
- The audio amplitude histogram now sits directly under the spectrogram, lined up with what you’re looking at.
- NewA floating exit-fullscreen button appears in fullscreen, and the now-meaningless Height control is hidden there - the view fills the screen on its own.
1.13
Liner Notes
4 June 2026, 06:31
- NewMusic files now surface their tags and lyrics - artist, album, year and the rest from ID3, Vorbis, MP4 and Opus - plus embedded or .lrc timed lyrics, each in its own card.
- NewFLAC files now report their true sample rate, bit depth, and channel count from the stream header.
- NewThe spectrogram controls are reorganised into tidy View / Resolution / Actions groups, and the Live microphone view keeps a rolling buffer so you can analyse the last 15 seconds at any moment.
- FixAnalysing a video’s scenes no longer hijacks the player - detection runs off-screen while you keep scrubbing, and very large videos skip automatic detection (start it by hand).
- FixRecorded-audio scrubbing and seeking now behave; the mobile navbar stays pinned and the footer links stack cleanly.
1.12
Fine Tuning
4 June 2026, 04:43
- NewThe spectrogram gains a Sensitivity slider that pulls faint detail out of the noise floor - it is render-only, so it redraws instantly without recomputing the FFT.
- NewEvery spectrogram now carries an at-a-glance stats line: the peak frequency, the detected frequency range, the dynamic range in dB, and the analysis resolution (Hz per bin and milliseconds per frame).
- NewThe old Patch notes page is now the Changelog - same page, plainer name, with the header link renamed on every page.
- Clicking valjdakosta in the byline (and other link.valjdakosta.com links) now opens in the same tab instead of a new one; the Links button keeps its tap-to-confirm and still opens separately.
- FixMoving the mouse over the title during its intro animation now blends with the sweep instead of cutting it short.
- FixHeader tidy-ups: the Changelog heading holds to a single line, and valjdakosta drops just clear of the tail of the title instead of clipping it.
- FixThe About page’s section tabs were stretched across the wrong columns - they now sit evenly across the row.
1.11
Plain Language
3 June 2026, 21:57
- NewHover or tap the new “?” help buttons beside almost every readout - across photos, sound and video, PDF, 3D STL models, and unknown files - for a plain-language note on what each value means (aspect ratio, megapixels, GPS altitude, sample rate, bit depth, bitrate, PDF Creator vs Producer, STL triangles and volume, and more).
- The photo LSB analysis explanation is now a tidy
[?]toggle instead of always-on text.
1.10
Escape Hatch
3 June 2026, 20:45
- NewThe file-loading popup now has a Cancel button that aborts a slow or huge load - even mid folder-scan - and hands the page straight back to you.
- FixTypography tidied site-wide (em-dashes to hyphens) and the footer dependency list realigned.
1.09
The Treemap
3 June 2026, 14:41
- NewDrop a folder or ZIP and it opens as an interactive treemap - every file sized by the disk it uses; click a folder to zoom in, click a file to analyse it, with a file-type breakdown and support for archives nested inside archives.
- NewAudio files with embedded cover art now show the artwork - and you can open and analyse it as a photo.
- NewCloud-only files (OneDrive, iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox) that aren’t downloaded to this device yet are now detected and explained clearly, instead of failing with a generic error.
- NewPrograms & libraries (EXE, DLL) reveal far more - file and product version, company, copyright, description, linker and subsystem versions, and security mitigations.
- NewSteam & Valve files (VDF, ACF) are now parsed - App ID, name, install directory, size, and the full key tree.
- FixVideos no longer briefly play while being analysed on desktop.
- New formats: M4B audiobooks, 3G2 video, Grasshopper (GH/GHX), KiCad PCB, and CRDOWNLOAD; dropzones now mention folders are accepted, every loading bar shares one
[////////]style, and the dark-mode button reads DAY / NIGHT.

1.06
Travel Light
