What is a .IGES file?
IGES is an older standard CAD exchange format for 3D models and surfaces.
- Did you know
- IGES was the first widely used CAD exchange format, published in the United States in 1980.
- IGES grew out of a 1970s United States Air Force programme aimed at making rival CAD systems talk to each other.
- The standard was developed with help from the National Bureau of Standards, Boeing and General Electric.
- The “I” was meant to be “Integrated” like other Air Force projects, but it was renamed “Initial” before release.
- Its first version was adopted as the American national standard ANSI Y14.26M.
- What Analyser shows you
- View STL, OBJ, PLY, OFF, STEP, IGES, BREP, 3MF and AMF models in an interactive WebGL viewer with triangle count, bounding box, surface area and volume. STEP/IGES/BREP are tessellated with OpenCASCADE and STEP shows its originating CAD system, version and AP203/214/242 protocol; 3MF and AMF let you inspect each model and assembly on the build plate individually.
- Open a .IGES file
- Drag a .IGES file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It opens entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
