What is a .TAP file?
TAP files hold CNC G-code, a nod to the old paper-tape programs machines once read.
- Did you know
- The .tap name recalls the punched paper tape that fed early CNC machines.
- The extension recalls the punched paper tape that early numerically controlled machines read before computers were built in.
- TAP files are usually produced by CAM software such as Mastercam, which turns toolpaths into machine-ready G-code.
- What Analyser reads
- Analyse G-code for 3D printers and CNC machines - detect the slicer or CAM tool, machine and controller, toolpath, and print or cut dimensions (Prusa, Bambu, Cura, Fusion 360, Mastercam, GRBL, Fanuc, Haas).
- Depth of analysis
- .TAP is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
- Open a .TAP file
- Drag a .TAP file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
