What is a .SGY file?
SGY is a SEG-Y seismic data file from geophysical surveys.

- SEG-Y has been the seismic-data standard since the 1970s.
- SGY is just an alternative extension for SEG-Y, the seismic format created by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
- The format still carries its tape-era 3200-byte EBCDIC text header followed by a 400-byte binary header.
