What is a .POT file?
POT is a GNU gettext portable object template - the master list of translatable strings with the translations left blank, used as the starting point for every language.

- A .pot file is generated by scanning source code for marked strings, so it always reflects the program’s current text - and has nothing to do with the old PowerPoint .pot template.
- Translators copy the .pot to a language-specific .po and fill in the blanks; tools then merge later template updates without losing existing work.
- Keeping the template separate means a single .pot drives every translation, so adding a language never touches the source code.

- .POT is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
