What is a .KMZ file?
KMZ is a zipped KML file, the format Google Earth uses for places and overlays. Opened by Google Earth.
- Did you know
- KMZ packs a KML map and its images into one zipped bundle for Google Earth.
- KML takes its name from Keyhole, Inc, the company behind the Earth viewer that Google bought in 2004 and renamed Google Earth.
- Under the hood a .KMZ file is really a ZIP archive - rename it to .zip and you can browse the files inside.
- What Analyser reads
- Identify geographic files: Shapefile (SHP) and zipped Google Earth (KMZ). GPX, KML, and GeoJSON get full parsing + a map (see above).
- Depth of analysis
- .KMZ is an identification-grade format: Analyser recognises it from its bytes and decodes the header metadata it carries, rather than opening it in a full viewer. Formats that do get a full viewer are marked "Full" on the formats page.
- Open a .KMZ file
- Drag a .KMZ file onto the Analyser home page (or tap to pick one). It is identified entirely in your browser - nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once installed.
