What is a .COPYING file?
COPYING is the conventional filename for a project’s licence text - most often the full GNU GPL or LGPL - shipped alongside its source code.

- The name COPYING comes from the GNU project, whose licences open with terms about freely copying and distributing software rather than restricting it.
- It is plain text by convention so it is readable everywhere, and package managers often look for COPYING or LICENSE to detect a project’s licence.
- A file like gmp.COPYING simply prefixes the dependency name, so several bundled libraries can keep their licences side by side.
