What is a .AC3 file?
AC-3 (Dolby Digital) is a surround-sound audio format used on DVDs and in broadcast.
- Did you know
- Dolby Digital debuted in cinemas in 1992 and became the standard sound format for DVDs.
- On a 35mm film print, the Dolby Digital data is optically printed in the tiny gaps between the sprocket holes along the film edge.
- AC-3 carries up to 5.1 channels, where the “.1” is a dedicated low-frequency effects channel for the subwoofer.
- Dolby Digital is mandatory audio on the DVD-Video standard, which is a large part of why it became so ubiquitous.
- Batman Returns is generally cited as the first film to receive a wide theatrical release in Dolby Digital.
